How to Clean Vinyl Records (the Right Way)

Most of the crackle on a record isn't "old vinyl" — it's dust and static in the groove. Clean records sound clearer, track better, and protect your stylus. Here's a safe routine for every play plus a deeper clean for records that need it.

Before every play: the 10-second routine

  1. Put the record on the platter.
  2. Lay an anti-static carbon-fiber brush flat on the surface; let the rotation carry dust into the bristles for 2–3 rotations.
  3. Lift the brush with the dust. Done.

This alone removes the dust and static behind most pops and clicks — and keeps gunk off your needle.

The deeper clean (for thrift finds)

  1. Apply record-safe cleaning fluid to a microfiber/velvet pad (don't soak the record).
  2. Wipe with the grooves (circular), never across them.
  3. Dry fully, then store in a fresh inner sleeve.

Do not: use household cleaners, alcohol on 78s, paper towels (they scratch), or tap water alone (mineral deposits).

FAQ

Can I clean records with water or alcohol?

Use a fluid made for vinyl. Plain tap water leaves mineral deposits; alcohol can damage some records (never on 78s). Distilled water plus proper fluid is the safe route.

What's the single most important tool?

An anti-static carbon-fiber brush. It removes the dust and static that cause most surface noise, in seconds, before every play.

Do new records need cleaning?

Often yes — they can carry mold-release residue and static from pressing and packaging. A quick brush (and a wet clean for noisy ones) helps.

How do I stop records getting dusty again?

Store vertically in fresh anti-static inner sleeves and outer sleeves, away from sunlight and heat.
